Without making this a novel, basically a comparison (of two similar quality implements) looks like this; most flails can be set to reverse cut (mulch) leaving a golf course quality cut (with the correct knives), but still have the ability to do the really ugly cutting too(instead of a bush-hog),also the weight is an advantage if you have a tail roller, every time you cut you roll the turf flat, the downside is they are a little slower because they cut based on finesse not brute strength, and there is no real collection ability, the clippings fall where they are cut, while a rotary is able to 'lift & cut' with an 'air tunnel' type deck, allowing cutting in the rain not just damp grass, collection systems are common, and blades are simple to sharpen and cost $20 times 3 blades, not $2.00 a piece times 200 knives with a flail ...... It all really comes down to your budget and what you want to achieve. Best of luck. ....

Morning Hillbilly in addition to Murf "GENERALLY" with a rotary, finish, mower you should mow more often. The fail will work better in deeper grass and mow faster. Bottom line is what are you trying achieve? Mow less often? Mow quicker? Do a really good job. I have used both types and now use a LP FD2572 for the main areas. I mow once a week set for 3" high. The lawn has slipped a couple of weeks when my work is really intense 80+ hour weeks and I have to slow down some to do a decent job. But the finish mower will do it. I also use it to cut tall stuff 2-3 times a years to keep the brush out. The 3ph does not tie up tractor so I can still use it off the lawn for stuff like you use yours. ....

Hillybilly, my JD 4100 pulls a Gearmore flail mower/shredder. Gearmore also sells flail mowers that are not classified as shredders. Mine has nine heavy knives. It not only shreds weeds it shreds branches and larger material (up to 2 inches). In the orchard I drop branches after pruning--and the flail makes them virtually disappear. I do agree with Murf and harvey. There is no collection system, but it cuts down tall weeds in one pass and leaves them "mulched" and spread evenly over the ground. I chose a flail mower/shredder because I wanted to cut the field more like a lawn than a Bush Hog type cut (we use the field as a sandlot ... football & baseball). I have no experience with Bush hog type mowers, but I think the primary difference is the quality of cut.
Best of luck. JonB ....
